There are plenty of things Gene enjoys.
A quiet afternoon. Pasta. Sitting somewhere comfortable. Snacks he did not personally pay for. Leaving an event at an entirely reasonable hour.
There are also things Gene would absolutely never do.
We've spent enough time with him to know the difference.
And while we wouldn't necessarily recommend making all of your life decisions based on a fictional capybara, there are worse role models.
1. Panic in a Group Chat
Someone is running seven minutes late.
Three people have already responded.
One person has sent:
WHERE ARE YOU???
Another has added three exclamation points and, for reasons no one understands, the siren emoji.
Gene has read all of this.
Gene has contributed nothing.
He knows the person will eventually arrive. Until then, he has snacks.
2. Explain Why He's Leaving Early
Gene came.
Gene socialized.
Gene had a nice time.
And now Gene would like to go home.
He isn't going to spend fifteen minutes explaining that tomorrow is busy, he's tired, the dogs need him, or he has an early morning.
He simply knows when he's had enough.
This is one of Gene's more admirable qualities.
Some of us are still standing by the door saying goodbye for the fourth time.
3. Pretend Something Is for Him When It Clearly Isn't
There are concerts Gene would attend.
There are restaurants Gene would enjoy.
There are activities that would genuinely make Gene happy.
And then there are things that are simply...
not for him.
Gene doesn't need to explain why. He doesn't need everyone else to dislike them too. He certainly isn't going to spend an entire evening doing something he hates because somebody told him he should enjoy it.
Sometimes the most peaceful sentence in the English language is:
"This isn't for me."
And that's enough.
4. Wake Up at 5 A.M. to Optimize His Morning
Gene does not have a 14-step morning routine.
He doesn't wake up before sunrise, drink lemon water, meditate for 22 minutes, journal about abundance, take an ice bath, read ten pages of a business book, and post about how much he accomplished before you woke up.
At 5 a.m., Gene is sleeping.
We feel good about this decision.
5. Get Involved in Drama That Has Absolutely Nothing to Do With Him
This may be Gene's greatest skill.
Something is happening.
He knows something is happening.
He might even know exactly what happened.
Still...
not his circus.
Gene doesn't need every detail. He doesn't need screenshots. He doesn't need to hear both sides before rendering an official decision.
Sometimes Gene simply continues eating his lunch.
More pasta. Less drama.
We've discussed this.
6. Rush Because Someone Else Didn't Plan Ahead
Gene understands emergencies.
He also understands that not everything labeled URGENT is actually urgent.
Sometimes another person's last-minute crisis is simply another person's last-minute crisis.
Gene will help when help is actually needed.
But Gene is not going to sprint through the parking lot because someone forgot the napkins.
There will be napkins.
Probably.
7. Spend 45 Minutes Deciding What to Order
Gene has evaluated the menu.
Gene wants fries.
The decision has been made.
Meanwhile, someone else at the table is asking the server whether the chicken sandwich is really good or merely pretty good.
Gene is already eating.
This is probably why he seems so relaxed.
8. Turn a Hobby Into a Side Hustle
Gene likes fishing.
This does not mean Gene needs to launch a fishing channel.
He does not need a sponsorship.
He does not need to monetize his expertise, create a course called The Gene Method, or develop a five-year plan for scaling his fishing operation.
Sometimes Gene goes fishing because he likes fishing.
Sometimes he catches one fish.
Sometimes he catches nothing.
Either way...
this is enough.
9. Care Whether You Like His Outfit
Gene got dressed.
Gene likes what he's wearing.
The matter is closed.
He did not search for this season's trends. He did not ask whether the color was flattering. He isn't wondering if everyone else will be dressed more casually.
He definitely didn't change three times before leaving the house.
He put on the shirt.
He left.
Imagine the time savings.
10. Say Yes Because He Feels Bad Saying No
This one is difficult for those of us who are not capybaras.
Gene can like you very much and still not want to go.
He can appreciate the invitation and still prefer his couch.
He can understand that everyone else is excited about something while personally having absolutely no interest in participating.
These things can all be true at the same time.
Gene has somehow figured this out.
We're working on it.
11. Take Himself Too Seriously
This might be the most important one.
Gene occasionally makes questionable decisions.
He gets himself into situations.
He has almost certainly eaten something he was not supposed to eat.
He does not spend the next three days replaying it.
Sometimes you make the wrong choice.
Sometimes you say something awkward.
Sometimes you walk confidently in the wrong direction and have to turn around while pretending you suddenly remembered something.
It's probably fine.
12. Miss a Perfectly Good Moment Because He's Waiting for a Better One
Gene can lie in the grass without wondering what comes next.
He can sit in a chair and watch fireflies.
He can fish without needing to catch the biggest fish.
He doesn't need every afternoon to become an adventure.
Sometimes the grass is soft.
Sometimes the moon is out.
Sometimes the people you like are sitting nearby.
This is enough.
So What Would Gene Do?
That's probably the better question.
He'd eat the pasta.
He'd wear the shirt.
He'd leave when he was tired.
He'd help when someone genuinely needed him.
He'd laugh when things went sideways.
He'd spend time with people he likes and politely decline some things he doesn't.
He'd probably sit outside for a while.
And he definitely wouldn't spend too much time worrying about whether he was doing any of this correctly.
That's sort of the point.
Why Gene Is Gene
When we created Gene, we didn't want him to be a mascot who simply appeared on Capy Life products. We wanted him to feel like an actual character.
He's calm, but not because everything around him is calm. He's funny without trying particularly hard to be funny. He's occasionally salty, sometimes sweet, and generally comfortable being exactly who he is.
That's why so many of our designs end up feeling like little pieces of his personality.
This Isn't for Me.
More Pasta, Less Drama.
It's Probably Fine.
This Is Enough.
They're funny on a shirt, but they're also things Gene would probably believe.
And apparently, so do a lot of us.

Who is Gene the Capybara?
Gene is Capy Life's original capybara character and the slightly unbothered face behind many of our designs. He was inspired by our family's encounter with capybaras in Taiwan and everything we loved about them: calm, quirky, unexpectedly funny, and completely comfortable doing their own thing.
Is Gene always calm?
Let's say usually.
Gene isn't meant to be a perfect little guru who has discovered the secret to life. That wouldn't be very funny.
